154 Edward Butler who took out a patent "for the mechanical propulsion of cycles" in 1884 and then had made a direct drive, two cylinder petrol engined, three wheeled vehicle at the Merryweather Fire Engine works in Greenwich in 1888. The car had a lot of firsts for a petrol driven car, for it had Ackerman steering with a fixed front axle and sub axles that steered the wheels, a spray carburettor and mechanically operated inlet valves.

Wilhelm Maybach introduced an atomising spray type carburettor in 1894, five years after Edward Butler had introduced it in England

By the mid-1880s, gas powered combustion engines had become available and an Englishman named Edward Butler attached one to his son's tricycle. Four months later Butler attached a larger motor to his own custom tricycle. (Tricycles at the time were not merely for children). His innovations were publicized and copied by others.

Edward Butler builds two-stroke petrol motor tricycle with electric ignition, radiator cooling, Ackermann steering.

Butler Petrol-Cycle England, 1884 - 1896, Edward Butler patented a gasoline fueled two stroke twin tricycle and showed it at the Stanley Bicycle Show in 1884. For the next ten or twelve years he made improvements to his design, changing to a geared drive four-stroke water-cooled engine that ran at about 600 rpm. He is credited with inventing or developing the spark plug and coil ignition, magneto and the spray jet carburetor, as well as the word "petrol" His "Petrol-cycle" was broken up for scrap in 1896, the few remaining pictures of this first British motorcycle are in the Science Museum in London, England

162 Hello Nick, my friends descend from the William Warne and Martha Elizabeth West marriage. Their Son Thomas Henry Warne born at St Austell, Cornwall 1848 who married Elizabeth Ann Bennetts who was born 1848 at Mevagissey, Cornwall, had a son James born 1885 in Probus, Cornwall, who married Avis Annie Osborn. Their son Ernest Henry Warne, born 1908 has descendants in Pemberton, Western Australia. We have just begun the tree and wonder if you have any photos of the ancestors of my friend George Warne.
There was one of Thomas Henry Warne on Ancestry. It was taken, by the looks, from a group photo. I wonder if we might have a copy of any other photos.
With very best wishes.
Anne in Western Australia
Many thanks.

200 On p.28 of his 'Westbarn Grange' Pt 2., Michael McGarvie states that in May 1768, the daughter of the late Edmund & Mary Philip of Higher Westbarn, married Stephen Butler, 'probably a son of Stephen Butler of Downs Farm'. Since Stephen the son of Stephen of Downs Farm, and Mary, nee Hutton, was only baptised on 23/1/1754, the Stephen who married Mary Phillips in 1768 is more likely to be the son of John Butler & Sarah Fry, and was aged 4 in 1732 when his father added his name to the lease in East Woodlands (unfortunately the baptism records for this Stephen has not been found). Stephen Butler is shown in the Land Tax for East Woodlands in 1766 Butler, Stephen (I230)
