Stephen Butler

  General Notes:

On p.28 of his 'Westbarn Grange' Pt 2., Michael McGarvie states that in May 1768, the daughter of the late Edmund & Mary Philip of Higher Westbarn, married Stephen Butler, 'probably a son of Stephen Butler of Downs Farm'. Since Stephen the son of Stephen of Downs Farm, and Mary, nee Hutton, was only baptised on 23/1/1754, the Stephen who married Mary Phillips in 1768 is more likely to be the son of John Butler & Sarah Fry, and was aged 4 in 1732 when his father added his name to the lease in East Woodlands (unfortunately the baptism records for this Stephen has not been found). Stephen Butler is shown in the Land Tax for East Woodlands in 1766
